The Libertarian Party of Hawaii discussed the Defend the Guard legislation with Dan Mcknight at the General Membership Meeting Held on November 4, 2024:
Defend the Guard
The Defend the Guard movement is a states' rights initiative that seeks to prohibit the deployment of the Hawaii National Guard into foreign conflicts without a formal declaration of war by the U.S. Congress. This is a clear violation of Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution, which gives Congress the power to "provide for calling forth the Militia."
Yet, time and again, we have seen the federal government sidestep this constitutional safeguard and send state National Guard units, including in Hawaii, into overseas military operations without the consent of the American people. This unlawful practice undermines the sovereignty of Hawaii and deprives our citizens of a say in decisions of war and peace.
The Libertarian Party of Hawaii must take the lead in defending the guard and restoring the rightful balance of power between the states and the federal government. We cannot allow this unconstitutional overreach to continue. Every member of our party should contact their state representatives immediately. Demand that they sponsor Defend the Guard legislation and make it a legislative priority. We must flood their offices with phone calls, emails, and visits until they take action. Our representatives need to hear our voices loud and clear - we will settle for nothing less than the full protection of Hawaii's sovereignty and the constitutional role of our National Guard.
